Introducing Work Package 5: Research on Platform Protection Systems

March 10, 2025

We’re proud to introduce WP5, which focuses on developing advanced platform protection systems. Our goals include advancing material and manufacturing solutions with eco-design principles, studying novel protection concepts using innovative technologies, and developing solutions against new threats like long rod KE penetrators as per STANAG 4569 level 5-6.

Objectives:

  • Advance material and manufacturing solutions with eco-design principles.
  • Study novel protection concepts using innovative technologies.
  • Develop solutions against new threats, especially long rod KE penetrators.

Tasks:

  • Task 5.1: Optimization of Current Solutions: Enhance the design process for platform protection systems, improve recyclability and sustainability of key components, and optimize solutions based on standard and sustainable materials.
  • Task 5.2: New Concepts: Increase performance and reduce weight of protection systems by developing novel design architectures that combine standard and sustainable materials, and optimize material properties and joining technologies.
  • Task 5.3: New Threats: STANAG Level 5 & 6, Microwave and Laser Beam: Develop dynamic passive armours to defeat long rod KE penetrators, increase dwell-penetration transition time of projectiles, and study protective reflective coatings and microwave shielding concepts.

We also present Pertti Lintunen, leader of WP5 and Senior Scientist at VTT, Finland. Pertti has a wealth of expertise in powder technology, metals, ceramics, and their composites. He has many years of experience in national and EU-funded project management. Pertti has been working at VTT since 1999, contributing significantly to numerous projects.
